We were delighted to welcome the team from Basalt Architects, an Icelandic architectural firm known for their work on projects such as the Blue Lagoon, together with representatives from the Embassy of Iceland.
Basalt Architects
Established in Reykjavík in 2009, Basalt Architects specializes in designing bathing facilities, spas, saunas, and pools. The firm is best known for the Blue Lagoon, one of the world’s largest geothermal spa resorts, which utilizes hot water from a nearby geothermal power plant. Through their projects, Basalt Architects explores the harmony between nature, wellness, and design, creating architecture inspired by Iceland’s volcanic landscapes and geothermal traditions.
Basalt Architects shares a strong interest in sustainability, well-being, and architecture in harmony with nature. In this context, they became interested in UDS’s philosophy and projects, reaching out to us during their stay in Japan, which led to this wonderful meeting.
We learned that the Blue Lagoon area has experienced nine volcanic eruptions since 2021, and that protective walls are being constructed to safeguard the facilities from lava flows. Their stories about architectural practice and design in such a unique natural environment were truly fascinating. The Basalt Architects team also showed great interest in UDS’s integrated approach — from concept development and design/construction to operation — all conducted within our own organization.
It was a truly valuable and inspiring opportunity.
We sincerely thank Basalt Architects for visiting us, and the Embassy of Iceland for kindly arranging this meeting.
